A fusão de “Trail” (trilha) com o termo “hawk” (falcão), na linguagem da marca Jeep, significa algo como “capacidade de ir um pouco mais além”. O vocábulo Trailhawk apareceu pela primeira vez no Easter Jeep Safari em 2012 nos paralamas de um carro-conceito feito a partir de um Grand Cherokee. A ideia principal naquele veículo especial de trilha era entregar uma aparência única e mais robustez como características funcionais, e também indicar, de fato, uma capacidade off-road mais aguerrida.
Em 2014 o nome Trailhawk passou a fazer parte do portfólio do Jeep Cherokee, distinguindo-o como o mais capaz entre os quatro modelos da linha: Sport, Latitude, Limited e Trailhawk. Aqui no Brasil o termo começou a ficar mais conhecido em 2015 com o Renegade, que também tem essa opção no mercado brasileiro. Agora ele junta-se à família Grand Cherokee como um sexto modelo para os carros ano 2017 (Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, SRT e Trailhawk).
A maneira mais fácil de identificar um Jeep na versão Trailhawk é observar os ganchos dianteiros e traseiros sempre pintados na cor vermelha. No caso do Renegade há dois na frente e um na parte de trás. O novo Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 2017 sairá equipado com uma nova série de equipamentos que ampliam a sua capacidade off-road, incluindo o Sistema II 4X4 Quadra-Drive, diferencial eletrônico com deslizamento limitado (ELSD) para todas as motorizações, suspensão pneumática Quadra-Lift e controle de frenagem e velocidade em subidas e descidas íngremes.

Além de todos os modos de informação e entretenimento, a tela exibe as características de capacidade 4X4 do veículo, como a altura da suspensão e modos de seleção de tração.
